Agree with Monique, embedded resin things are easy to do. I prefer epoxies over polyester for many reasons in this regard, but they’re much nicer to turn and polish.

You can turn HDPE plastics (chopping boards are this, as are milk bottles), and a student at St Michaels while I was there completed his entire year 12 project by collecting and melting down recycled milk containers into a solid blank, which was turned into
a lampshade. You can, though, purchase solid sections in a whole range of sizes and colours. Turning HDPE wants sharp sharp sharp tools, or scrapers, and then final sandpapering down through a broad range of grits to wind up nice.

Bakelite, Tufnol and so forth are formaldehyde resin composites (fabric in glues, effectively), and turn well – but they’re not commonly turned and mostly get used for gaskets and washers, pulleys and so forth.

You can, of course, use tree branches of relatively straight feature, stump sections, and so forth at will. They CAN be unpredictable however.
