Hi David,

It is a tough situation.

If your Principal class is supportive you might be able to ask for some adjustments.

I made arrangements last year to have one class without the 11's and one class without the 12's. This meant 7 classes a cycle instead of 6 and the 11's had 5 classes a cycle not 6. 12's still had 6.

This counted as an extra for me.

The 12's were in a classroom - unsupervised until production started. (The classroom they were in was adjacent to an art class that was supervised with a glass wall in between)

My position was that the 12's could not do folio work in the woodwork room and the 11's could not do practice work unsupervised.

The time before that I had a combined class the 11's did a mock-up only of unit 1 work so both groups were essentially in a classroom until 12's started Prac work.

No easy work around.

Good luck

Hi Brains Trust!

I’m in a situation for the 2nd year in a row where I am combining classes at my current school, in order to enable the subject to run on numbers available. Ideally, long-term, I’d be in a position not to, of course, but these
things take time.

Seeking feedback from those who have been in this situation around the best way to manage instructional time and coursework, and things you may have done in the past.

Generally, given the need for Unit 1/2 students to complete two complete design processes with accompanying practical work, while the Unit 3/4 have a single SAT over a longer period, I found it quite hectic and difficult to implement.
Specifically: supervision, direct instruction on machinery, and observation of folio work on both parties was naturally compromised, and as we do not hold a technician to the DT space who is qualified to supervise in this capacity, hard to know how to move
forward to improve same.

Has anyone been in the situation and have game-changing tips and tricks for me to make my (rather hectic) classroom better for next year?

Cheers!
